The Pear Tree

St. Therese was walking through the convent garden one day with Sr. Genevieve and said as she pointed to one of the pear trees:

“Those pear trees aren’t a bit attractive at present, are they? In the fall, however, when they are stewed and served to us in the refectory, we shall find them to our taste, and it will be hard to connect them with the fruit which we are looking at now. That is a good reminder of the truth that on the Last Day, when we shall all be delivered from our faults and imperfections, those Sisters, whose natural qualities may now be displeasing to us, might appear to us as great saints. And we shall perhaps gaze on them open-mouthed in wonder.” (My Sister St. Therese, p. 139)
